Château Gabaron Bordeaux Blanc 2022 (Bordeaux, France)
Well-made whites from Bordeaux aren’t that easy to find in Ontario (especially at this price point!). This blend of aromatic Sémillon and bright Sauvignon Blanc is sourced mostly from the prime white region of Entre-Deux-Mers, but by adding some juice from outside this region, Gabaron can declassify this wine as regular old ‘Bordeaux’ and save us all some cash.
Entre Vinyes ‘Brisat’ 2021 (Catalunya, Spain)
If you’ve had the Xarel-lo and Parellada grapes before, it’s probably been blended into Spain’s premier sparkler, Cava. For this example, Entre Vinyes goes off script by employing some extra long skin contact. It’s lower alcohol (aka easy-drinking), super crisp, slightly saline, and is filled with citrus, peach, and green tea. Enjoy with Thai mango salad, garlic shrimp, or Tuna crudo.
Weingut Koehler-Ruprecht Spätburgunder 2020 (Pfalz, Germany)
Germany is not just for Riesling! They make some seriously world-class Pinot Noir (they call it Spätburgunder). For a grape that’s as finicky to grow and produce as Pinot, some good old fashioned German efficiency is the right way to go. Wild raspberry and ripe cherry flavours, balanced with the traditional Autumn forest/leaf pile savoury Pinot aromas. Próst!
Iuli ‘Umberta’ Barbera 2022 (Piedmont, Italy)
Fabrizio and Summer Iuli are the only winemakers in the tiny mountain village of Montaldo di Cerrina. Here they’re working with 90 year old vines of Piedmont's other savoury red grape, Barbera. Complex and herbal on the nose, with a fresh alpine-berry brightness on the palate and a long finish, this is the perfect pairing for hearty, meaty, cheesy winter food.
Eccoci Montrodó Nergo 2021 (Catalunya, Spain)
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Grenache from ancient volcanic soil, bathed in Mediterranean sunshine? Nope, we’re not going to Sicily or Southern France, this gem is from the sunny hills of Girona, just east of Barcelona. We’re happy to showcase this silky-smooth medium-bodied beauty. Dark, ripe cassis and plum, with a complex herbal aroma that reminds us of eucalyptus and cedar.
Yarran Shiraz 2020 (New South Wales, Australia)
Australian Shiraz should be pretty familiar to most wine drinkers, but this one comes with a curveball. The award-winning Yarran is sourcing grapes from New South Wales, and Victoria - two different Aussie states. This organic Shiraz explodes with dried fruit and spice aromas, rich dark chocolate and dark violet florality. Some big bold flavour for gray November evenings.
