Rosewood “Follow the White Rabbit” 2019

Background

Rosewood is a great example of a winery that pivoted really well in response to Covid-19 restrictions. They offered free shipping on as few as 4 bottles, got into a ton of bottle shops around Ontaria and by the end of summer 2020 we were seeing their ‘Flora’ rosé and this White Rabbit all over social media.

They’ve also revamped their bottle design recently by using fun cartoon labels made by local artists. Their bottles are also what we like to call “backyard-ready”. Everything is sealed with a screw cap (easy-to-open), and the labels are waterproof. You can throw this bottle in a cooler filled with melting ice and the label won’t slip off while you're sitting by the lake.

Tasting Notes

This is winemaker Ryan Corrigan’s modern take on a new world Chardonnay. It’s wild fermented in a little bit of oak, but nowhere near what you’d find in the typical California Chard. The inclusion of about 3% Pinot Gris is there to provide a little bit of body and silky texture. This tastes like big juicy Chard through and through. Ripe apple and pear fruit and meyer lemon acidity. Lots of lush, rich texture. This has all the things you want from a Chardonnay (the juicy appley fruit and the warmth from the wood) without any of the flabbiness and heavy vanilla of other wines at this price point.

Food Pairing

Creamy sauces, mayo-heavy salads, or chips and dip - Rich goes with rich and because of that little bit of wood and little bit of Pinot Gris, this wine pairs nicely with big, rich flavours. Despite the fun label, this is serious Chard. You could sub it in for white Burgundy from down south in Macon and have it with a full roast chicken dinner, or breaded fried fish. Thirst-quenching and juicy, this wine could easily be consumed all by itself, but if you’re eating anything that goes with apple flavours, this would be a great wine to round out the meal.
